A study of the influence of vehicle headlamps and roadway lighting on the ability of drivers to see pedestrians along crosswalks in roundabout intersections

An outdoor field experiment was conducted to assess observers’ ability to detect and identify the walking direction of pedestrian targets in the field of view.

Key Findings:

  • The results suggest that vehicle headlamps have a significant role to play in pedestrian detection along roundabout intersections.

  • Systems such as HID headlamps, which produce greater amounts of peripheral illumination can result in shorter identification times for pedestrians.
